The Media Page in Resolve is arguably the most important page in the software, simply because it is key to keeping everything organised. If you read my previous blog, you would know how much I value organisation with projects.
The previous blog described how to maintain a file structure outside of Resolve, this blog will describe how to stay organised within Resolve.
The Media Page is the first in the row of pages at the bottom of the user interface, and it's primary use is to ingest all the media you will need for your project. It is separated into several different windows, these are Media Storage, Preview Window, Embedded Audio, Bins Window, and the Metadata window.
The Media Storage Window lists all of your drives on your computer, which you can then browse and select what media you need for your project. To add it to your project, drag it down to the Bins window. This will then automatically create a Timeline file, which essentially holds all of your data for the project.
Next is the Preview Window, which very simply shows you any image or plays any video files that you may need for your project. Next to this is the Embedded Audio window, which displays the audio levels of your media, along with displaying how many channels there are.
As mentioned before, the Bin Window is where you will store all of your media for your project. However, as described in my previous blog, it is better to use a file structure for larger projects. Here you can create bins to organise your media into video, audio, graphics, and sub clips, for example.
When you select a clip on the Media page, all of the information about the media will be displayed on the Metadata Window. Here you can find details such as clip length, frame rate, and resolution.
Before moving onto the next page, it is important to select your project file settings which will determine the frame rate and resolution of what you will eventually export. These can be found by clicking on the small cog in the bottom right of the screen, once you've ensured the settings are correct, save them and move onto the Cut page.
This will be explained in more detail next week.
